The Pillows was founded in Hokkaido in 1989. The Japanese alternative rock band was originally formed by vocalist and guitarist Sawao Yamanaka, bassist Kenji Ueda, drummer Shinichiro Sato, and guitarist Yoshiaki Manabe. Ueda left the band in 1992, while the remaining trio stayed together until their disbandment.
Over the decades, the pillows gained acclaim both in Japan and internationally, particularly after their music was prominently featured in the 2000 anime FLCL (Fooly Cooly). Songs like “Ride on Shooting Star,” “Little Busters,” and “Hybrid Rainbow” introduced their sound to a global audience. Among their other anime involvement, the band performed the Sket Dance ending theme song “Comic Sonic” (2011) and Ahiru no Sora opening theme”Happy Go Ducky!”(2019).
