ChatGPT down: AI chatbot back online after second outage this year

Earlier today, OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT suffered an outage. Over 20,000 users reported issues while accessing the chatbot. As per Down Detector, a platform that analyses outages of popular online tools in real-time, users also found disruptions with OpenAI’s text-to-video generator Sora and ChatGPT API services.

Following the outage, the Sam Altman-led company confirmed the incident and said it has been resolved. The problem occurred at 20:28 PST (around 9:58am IST) on February 5. OpenAI said that it was investigating the issue. Moments later, it stated that several users were getting recovery signals from API and Sora services. The downtime reportedly began at around 9:14am IST. It not only affected regular users but also businesses and developers. 

Image source: DownDetectorWhile the exact cause of the outage is still unknown, OpenAI has assured that it is working on the issue and has already implemented a fix. This is the second time this year that ChatGPT is facing an outage. On January 23, ChatGPT was down for nearly an hour. A few ChatGPT users reported seeing a message that read, “We are currently experiencing elevated error rates in the API. We are currently investigating.” Other users who accessed the AI chatbot saw a bad gateway error message.

In response, OpenAI had said, “We have identified the root cause of this issue, and are currently working to implement a fix.”
