ChatGPT faced global outage for the second time this year

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has recently faced a global outage across the world, according to the Downdetector website. The company has also acknowledged and stated that its products, including ChatGPT, Sora and API were facing increased errors. The surge in errors has been reported since 9.19 AM on Wednesday morning. OpenAI has recently updated on its Status page that the issue has been resolved as well.

ChatGPT global outage

Over 26,000 users worldwide have reported issues with ChatGPT, according to Downdetector. Complaints began surging around 9:19 AM and continued to rise as more users encountered problems.

Approximately 92 per cent of the reports were related to ChatGPT app itself, while 7 per cent experienced website errors, and 1 per cent faced API issues.

The cause of the outage remains unknown, and the company is actively investigating the issue. A fix has already been implemented, leading to partial recovery, but efforts are still underway to fully resolve the problem.

This isn’t the first time ChatGPT has suffered issues. OpenAI previously acknowledged a similar outage.

Last time, in January, both the ChatGPT app and the website version faced issues. During the outage, users were facing “Bad Gateway Error”, while trying to work with ChatGPT. According to the reports, this error occurred as the company was trying to launch its first AI agent Operator.

And just like always, as soon as the issues arrived, users took to X (formerly Twitter), sharing memes and reactions.

OpenAI AI agents

One of the reasons why outages are rising is that OpenAI is working for its AI agents more rigorously now, especially after the DeepSeek launch. The company has recently launched two of its AI agents: the Operator and the Deep Research. While the Operator can be tasked with a wide range of repetitive browser activities, such as completing forms, ordering groceries, or even creating memes, it cannot perform in-depth research like the new AI agent. On the other hand, Deep Research builds on the reasoning capabilities to bridge the gap, allowing it to take on the types of problems people face in work and everyday life.

Both the agents are a significant step toward the broader goal of developing AGI, which OpenAI has been pointing out for a long period.
