Exploration Asia Reimagined: The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s Next Chapter Unveiled

03 FEBRUARY 2025 (Calgary, AB) – The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is embarking on an exciting new chapter, driven by a refreshed vision and purpose, with an unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation, strengthening community ties, and continuing to provide exceptional animal care.

At the helm of this bold transformation is Dr. Kyle Burks, who joined the organization as President & CEO earlier this year. With more than two decades of experience in leadership roles at the Sacramento Zoo, Denver Zoo, The Walt Disney Company, and most recently as Chief Operating Officer at Audubon Nature Institute, Dr. Burks brings a wealth of expertise in animal management, wildlife conservation, and innovative business strategies.

“The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has long been a leader in wildlife conservation, inspiring over 1.5 million visitors annually and driving impactful global conservation efforts,” said Dr. Burks. “I’m excited to be part of this powerhouse team as we chart a bold vision for the future—one that empowers people to take action for wildlife and build a thriving planet for generations to come. It’s an incredible time to be a part of this organization, and I’m eager to work alongside our dynamic leadership, passionate staff and dedicated volunteers to create meaningful, lasting change.”

Forward, Together: A New Era of Conservation and Community Impact

From its humble beginnings rescuing orphaned and injured wildlife, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has grown into Canada’s most visited zoo and a globally recognized conservation leader. Over the past 90+ years, the zoo has continually adapted to the evolving needs of wildlife and its community. With a centennial on the horizon, it’s not just celebrating the past—it’s launching a bold new chapter for the future anchored by an ambitious vision: “A future where people and wildlife thrive, together.” This vision is backed by a renewed purpose: “We act for wildlife, saving species and inspiring people to join us.”

Redefining Exploration Asia for Animals and Visitors Alike

The first major initiative of this new era is the multi-phased redevelopment of the zoo’s Exploration Asia zone. Phase 1 is set to open in Summer 2026. Upon completion, this transformed space will immerse visitors in the rich biodiversity of Southeast Asia, the Eastern Himalayas, and Northeast Asia.

The redevelopment will feature expansive, dynamic habitats designed to further enhance animal well-being while creating impactful educational experiences for visitors. Conservation storytelling will be seamlessly integrated throughout, sparking passion and inspiring action to protect species facing critical challenges in these ecosystems. As part of the project, the zoo will bid farewell to some species, making way for larger, more complex habitats for others.

“This project is a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation, education, and animal well-being” said Dr. Burks. “When the redeveloped Exploration Asia opens in Summer 2026, visitors will step into a world of immersive designs, hands-on learning, art, and powerful storytelling. Our goal is to foster a deeper connection between our visitors and the incredible animals of this region, while also encouraging action to protect their habitats and ensure their survival.”

The first phase of the redevelopment begins soon, and visitors can expect more details in the coming weeks.

For more than 30 years, the internationally accredited Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has been a leading authority in wildlife conservation, reintroducing threatened species to the wild and empowering communities to conserve natural resources to positively impact both the environment and local inhabitants.

While our work is global, our roots run deep in the Albertan conservation community. Sitting on 125 acres in the heart of the city, we operate one of the oldest charities in Alberta, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo – a not-for-profit charitable wildlife conservation organization that works to fight the extinction of plants and animals worldwide. In addition to the zoo, we proudly operate the Archibald Biodiversity Centre (ABC), Canada’s largest conservation breeding and research facility. Nestled on 330 acres in the Albertan prairies, the ABC is a stronghold for biodiversity and a temporary home to some of Canada’s most iconic species-at-risk.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is passionate about inspiring and educating generations of visitors about the importance of biodiversity and conservation. Together, we will continue to be a force of nature for making the world a wilder place. Learn more at WilderInstitute.org and CalgaryZoo.com.
